A Little Bit of PRIDE Goes a Long Way

If you haven’t already seen it on social media, June is PRIDE month, a time for LGBTQIA+ individuals to celebrate their differences, reflect on our history, and advocate for greater acceptance of marginalized peoples both inside and outside the community, especially LGBTQIA+ people of color. Parades and events are happening all over the world, and many of them are happening in countries where being gay is still punishable by death. These brave souls are fighting for freedoms in some of the most dangerous places to just be human.   I personally have never had to experience anything so terrifying. Perhaps...

Small Batch Me

Small Batch Me

In your own words, what does it mean to be a small batch dyer?   In short, it means I produce smaller quantities of my colorways in a contained environment.  In long...   - It means I have two hotel pans and two table top burners connected to two extension cords plugged into one outlet.  - It means I have one prep table for all of my mixing, dyeing, heating, cooling, rinsing, and drying.  - It means I can produce less product in a longer amount of time.  - It means my production costs are higher. - It means I...

Dodging the Draft

I don’t know if that’s true, and I haven’t taken the time to find out, but if it is…whew! That’s a lot of knitting! But it’s also Stephen West, so who are we to question?   But that brings up an interest point for me that I haven’t seen from a lot of designers: the first draft.   It seems that in writing we...

Dyeing, Designing, and Depression

Dyeing, Designing, and Depression

It’s no surprise in today’s society to hear someone admit that they have some sort of depression or anxiety as part of a movement of individuals to normalize mental health issues in our culture and world, but rarely, unless you are close to someone or reading an op-ed on the topic, do you come across first hand accounts of what that really means for someone on a day-to-day basis. While a growing number of Americans are embracing mental health issues, many are still unaware of what it means to live with a mental illness.   I have depression and anxiety,...
